The Trahern Chronicles- Estate Records of Wesley Trahern

Estate Records of Wesley Trahern from Hinds County Chancery Court, Raymond, Mississippi, file #017
Wesley apparently died much earlier than previously supposed, sometime in 1825.

The first document is dated November 29th, 1825, and names William Trahern as Administrator, and William L. Arick, Jesse Cole, and William Matthews as securities of a $6,000 bond for the estate. For some reason it isn’t recorded or approved until November 29th, 1829.

March 10th, 1826 an auction and accounting of the estate was performed by William Trahern. The property of the estate was valued at $1339.70, debts due to the estate were $1240.00, amount of cattle due to be sold May 1827, valued at $700.oo for a total estate value of $3219.97. The outstanding debts amounted to about $5,000 per his statement. He declared the estate insolvent at that time. This is recorded April 18th, 1827.

Sale of items on March 10th are as follows: (I have found error’s in their math)
William Trahern purchased a secretary, 3 poplar tales, 12 chairs, 3 mirrors for a total of $53.00, Joseph A. McRaven purchased 6 chairs for $3.00, William Trahern purchased 6 chairs for $4.oo, Silas Brown purchased one shot gun and pouch for $13.00, William Trahern purchased one pine cupboard, one lantern, candle stick and castor, one decanter, 2 tea boards, one pair steel yard for a total of 15.37 and ½ cent, Stewart McRaven purchased one set of knives, forks and flat iron for $2.00, William Trahern purchased one bed and bedstead for $13.00, one for 11.12 and ½ cent, one for $20.00, and one for 10.50 for a total of $52.62 and ½ cent, Stewart McRaven purchased one cot frame for ? amount, William Trahern purchased one cot frame for $25.00, and one for $ 6.20 and ½ cent, two pairs end irons and a large kettle for $8.70, one small kettle and oven for $2.75, one oven and one grid iron for $2.56 and ½ cent, one pair waffle iron’s and a tea kettle for $1.25, Samuel Wooldridge one plow for $2.??, William Edwards, one plow for $1.??, William Matthews a plow for $3.??, Silas Moor a plow for $1.??, Benjamin Fortner a plow for $1.??, Arthur Fortner two weeding hoes for $1.??, Thomas Oasley, two weeding hoes for $1.??, Samuel Wooldridge one scythe blade and 2 large hoes for $1.87 and ½ cent, Abraham Cook one grubbing hoe for Unknown amount, Arthur Fortner one broad ax for $6.??, Martin Fortner 3 Chipels(?), 2 drawing knives, and a hand saw for $3.??, and a lot of old iron for $2.??.
This is to amount to $197.00.
Page 2, (page is largely unreadable) Abram Cook, 2 axes for $1.??, Arthur Fortner 2 axes for $1.??, Martin Fortner on3 axe for unknown amount, Samuel Wooldridge one pair hammers for unknown amount, four bells for $4.??, William Trahern 4 wagon wheels for $29.??, Hiram Runnels 22 sheep for $5?.??, Samuel Wooldridge one pair double trees, unknown amount, William Trahern, 6 dishes, for unknown amount, and a lot of hogs for $5?.??, William Arick, one horse for $6?.??, Joseph M. Cook, 6 hides for unknown amount, William Trahern, six hides for unknown amount, Abram Cook, one horse mill for unknown amount, Thomas Copeland, fifteen geese for unknown amount, William Trahern 3 slaves for unknown amount, Obediah Dummis, one plow for unknown amount.

The auction raised $1339.70 as below, and had been valued by the appraisers for $1103.87 and ½ cent.
On June 4th, 1826, William Arick, Jesse Cole, and William Mathews request that they be relieved of their bond.

On October 23rd, 1826, William Trahern, J.W. J. Minor and Ann Trahern sign a record for a bond. Ann Trahern, is probably the widow of James Trahern, Jr. the nephew of Wesley who died September 24, 1824, or a niece of Wesley, daughter of James Trahern, Sr.. J.W.J. Minor married Mary Trahern, (possibly the sister of James Trahern, Jr.?) on April 13th, 1826.
This is recorded August 30th, 1827.
On April 23rd, 1827 an order for appraisal was given.

May 14th, 1827 cattle, one small bed stead, one warren, pork from wild hogs, and horses sold for $547.50, and the orphans of Wesley paid $300.00 for a slave named Mary. (though all 3 slaves had already been purchased by William, this is puzzling, unless he failed to pay for them)

April 21st, 1828, a bond was issued to William, James and Ann Trahern for $6,000.00 on behalf of the estate.

December 20th, 1828 James McRaven, John A. Grimball, and Thomas J. Coffee, commissioners filed a report of claims against the estate of Wesley Trahern. The allowed claims are William Barnes, dated 1824 for $355.??, F. H. Baird dated 1828 for $5.8?, H. G. Runnels dated 1825, for $78.??, A. G. Holland, dated 1825, for $14.??, Martin McGilvary, dated 1824 for $81.??, Josiah Shipp dated 1825 for $5.??, Caleb Young dated 1825 for $2.??, and William Trahern, administrator. They also ask for some claims to be discharged. (This is hard to read and is partly cut off on the copy). … Which, these shall remain, in sum of $1803.38 to be applied, in the education and support of the heirs of Wesley Trahern, or should it be so determined to discharge of some old claims against the estate, which the commissioners do not conceive themselves authorized to allow-
The first is an account in form of James Trahern for $4237.59 ½ cent ? as far back as the year 1807, and extending up to March 1813, This account from it’s antiquity the commissioners are disposed to think, in legal ?, they cannot allow, keeping in view at the ? to the rights and interests of the heirs and ? ?, although they have no doubt, but they consideration upon which the sum was founded, did actually exist. There was a payment made as late as 182? Upon said account, which is proven by William Trahern, the effect of which, the commissioners ? as a ?, fully to understand, rather believing, honor ?, that said payment does ? as waiver and acknowledgement of the claim, by the deceased. In the midst of this embarrassment, the commissioners therefore ? ? the said claim bact th his honor, the court from which they arrived their authority, and the party wherein, can determine a final decision on his claim, by having the same referred to referees, especially appointed. The second account is in form of John Trahern, for one hundred dollars, dated in 1807, which the commissioners have ejected (last line unreadable).
James took William to court over this claim, and his handling of the estate. John Trahern, is another brother, who resided in Tennessee.

January 14th, 1829, James Trahern signs a receipt for $4237.59 and ½ for the claim.

March 28th, 1829 Order ordering William Trahern to appear to update the court.
June 26th, 1829, William Trahern ordered to appear.

July 4th 1831, order to appear for William Trahern
March 26, 1839, Letter from Cornelius Lane, William M. Brown, and William M. Murdock, can’t read it entirely, but William died, it does mention $2,000.
1844 to 1845, notices to appear, and posting of the sale of Wesley’s land in the Southwestern Farmer, printed at Raymond, Mississippi, by James Kerr, the new administrator of the estate. It is acknowledged by F.E. Plummer, representative for Amelia, Letha, and Washington, Wesley’s heirs (minor’s at time of his death). SE quarter of section 1, NE quarter of section 12, in township 4 of range one west, and the south west quarter of section six, and the north west quarter of section 7 in township 4 of range one east.
Also in 1844, the heirs of Wesley are named in a letter by James Kerr … The said children were named Wesly Trahern, since dead. [no mention of his heirs], Willim (William) who resides in the county of Hinds [actually lived in Holmes], Amelia who has since intermarried with Claiborne C. West, who are supposed to reside in the Republic of Texas. Letha, who has since intermarried with Cornelius Land, and whose husband is supposed to be dead, and who is also supposed to reside in the Republic of Texas, Minerva, who has since intermarried with____, (name unknown) {Josiah Metcalf}, who are supposed to reside in the county of Tallahatchie, Washington Trahern, who resides in parts unknown, supposed to be beyond the jurisdiction of this state, if living [he was, he fought in the Mexican war, in Texas, was briefly in Washington, D.C., and then moved to California, none of his children are on the Dawes, his children never mentioned being part Choctaw.] and Gilbert Trahern who is supposed to reside in the county of Tallehatchie, according to the best of the information which your petitioners can obtain.

Sale of the land to Alfred Dixon for $200.00, left the estate $153.20.
From the rest of 1846 to 1856, notices to appear, and costs are itemized. James Kerr, died in 1856, and the estate was finally dismissed. No mention if any of the heirs were located or paid in the paperwork. The last date I found was July of 1856.

The Trahern Chronicles - Wesley Trahern

Wesley Trahern married Delilah Brashears, the daughter of Zadoc Brashears and Susanna Vaughn in 1808. He borrowed 5000 dollars from his brother James Trahern, and 500 from his brother John Trahern to start a plantation. In the treaty of 1820 Wesley Trahern, along with Mary Mcdonald was given a square mile from the land ceded to the United States government from the treaty of Doaks Stand. This land was located southeast of Jackson, Mississippi. It likely bordered what is called Trahon Creek after Wesley Trahern.

Plat maps for Hinds County show marks for Trahon's field. This was the original land farmed by Wesley Trahern, and upon his death this land was registered to his brother, William Trahern, as evidenced by the land description in Wesley's estate records.

Wesley and Delilah had five children before Delilah died and Wesley remarried Agnes Turnbull. He had two more children by Agnes before his death at the end of 1825. His estate records show a lengthy process of settling his estate. The executor of the estate was his brother, William Trahern. By the time the estate was settled, the new executor (William had died) told the court that he had no idea where Wesley's seven children were located. It is not clear that any of the children ever received their portion of the estate.

Both of Wesley's wives, Delilah and Agnes were mixed blood Choctaws. Delilah was only 1/4, and Agnes was over 1/2. After Wesley died, Agnes Turnbull remarried Samuel Foster. After the treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, Agnes and her children, Minerva and Gilbert Trahern are found in Tallahatchie county, Mississippi.

Wesley Brashears Trahern, Wesley's eldest son, married Lucy Juzan, the daughter of his Uncle James "wife" Peggy. He died about 1832 in what is now Sumter county, Alabama. Lucy and his children emigrated to the new Choctaw nation in what is now Oklahoma most likely about 1848-1849 when the bulk of the Juzan's emigrated.

William Trahern, the next son, attended the Choctaw academy, where he had hopes of becoming a doctor. Unfortunately, that did not come to pass, and he returned to Holmes County, Mississippi where he married Rebecca. Rebecca is rumored to be a daughter of Samuel Long and Felicity Leflore, and in 1840 there is a man Wesley's age and a female Rebecca's age in the household that cannot be accounted for. Unfortunately, no records exist for the estate of Samuel Long to verify this information.  William died in Holmes County and his wife and children moved to the Choctaw nation where they were granted citizenship by the Council.

Amelia Trahern married Richard Claiborne West and moved to Texas. When Richard died, Amelia then married Homer S. Thrall. Homer Thrall wrote a history of Texas that was used by the schools of Texas for many years. Amelia, along with her sister, Letha, were granted citizenship by the Choctaw nation in the late 1880's. She is buried in Texas.

Letha Trahern married Columbus Lane and then Jesse Pendleton. Letha is the only daughter of Wesley who has descendants registered as Choctaws. Letha and her husband lived and died in Texas.

George Washington Trahern was famous in his time. He served in the Mexican American war ,after he returned home from the Choctaw Academy, as a Texas Ranger. His recollections of the War, where he was captured along with his entire company were published. A few years after the war, he was among the first settlers in what is now Stockton, California. He owned a large ranch, and was among one of the most wealthy citizens of that time. He also raised race horses. As a result, he is the easiest to research. I was also able to locate a short biography in a book about the Stockton area.

Though he gives information about his parents in his recollections, he does not claim at all to be Choctaw, nor does he mention where he received his education. He first had an illegitimate child with a Spanish woman (she sued unsuccessfully for a share of his estate) before marrying Henrietta B. Childers. Unfortunately, most of his grandchildren died young with the exception of a single granddaughter who never married, thus he has no descendants. I have been unable to trace the descendants of his illegitimate daughter.

Minerva Trahern married Joseph Metcalf and remained in the area of Tallahatchie. I have not been able to track descendants beyond her grandchildren. None of Minerva's descendants were ever recognized as Choctaw citizens.

Gilbert Trahern married Laura Slack and remained in Tallahatchie. His son, Louis Trahern came to the new Choctaw nation about the same time as William's family did. Louis and his family were recognized as Choctaws.

Thanks to a descendant of William Trahern, Carol Hoyt, I have these pictures of William Trahern's sons. I unfortunately don't know exactly whose who.

The Trahern Chronicles- James Trahern Sr.and his children, James N. Trahern and Jerry Trahern

James Trahern was the eldest son of Nehemiah and Amelia. He apparently had a wife and children in Virginia before coming to the Mississippi Territory, as we find an obituary for a James Trahern, Jr in Hinds county in 1824. Not long after a Mary Trahern, probably his widow marries J.W. Minor. She dies though, as he remarries within a few years. I found a newspaper article from 1829, the same year as James Trahern's death that states he is to testify for a case that involves his brother John's children in Jackson, Mississippi. His probate records indicate that he gave all his possessions to his brother William, and do not consist of any substantial information.

The case involving John Trahern's children, as heirs of their mother, actually is several cases. Some of the information is available in the Chancery records online for Virginia, but the case in which he was to testify is not. So until someone can go to Virginia, we do not know if he testified or not. It does give us a time frame for his death though, because James Trahern, deceased is named in his brother Wesley's probate information in 1829 as well.

James Trahern's children from his first wife have no known descendants, as we do not find them anywhere except as previously mentioned.

We do know that sometime 1814-1816, James had a relationship with Margaret or Peggy, the wife of Charles Juzan. Exactly when she and Charles Juzan seperated is debatable. Primarily because of her youngest daughter, Eliza Ann Juzan, who gives her age in 1885, as born 1814, and on her tombstone it says 1819. She herself is quoted in a newspaper article that she did not know how old she was. I suspect that Peggy and Charles had already seperated by the time that James Trahern and Peggy had their son James N. Trahern. Peggy was a mixed blood Choctaw and niece of the Chief Pushmataha.

James N Trahern was listed as age 21 in 1835 at the Choctaw Academy which puts him born about 1816. His broken tombstone was transcribed by the wpa and has his birth year as 1814. James's brother Jerry was, I suspect, born after James returned from Virginia, as in 1830 William Trahern, the brother of James has a boy under 5-9 in his home, two boys 10-14, a boy 15-19, a male 30-39 and himself. This corresponds with Jerry, James N., George W., and William Trahern's ages. I have no idea who the male 30-39 was, if he is a relative or not. As in the autobiography for William's son William Eustace Trahern there is no mention of siblings other than his brother James ( or an earlier marriage), I suspect that if this household does include William's children, they died before William Eustace Trahern was born.

Jerry Trahern is described as having been in trouble with the law and having died near Jackson, Mississippi around the same time as his mother, Peggy, in 1846. He never married and had no heirs. This information came from the land files for Peggy and was obtained from conversations with Sandra Riley.

As previously mentioned, James N. Trahern attended the Choctaw Academy. He arrived in April 1831 with his cousin, George Washington Trahern, and another cousin, Joseph P Lancaster. He isn't listed among the students in the articles I found on the academy until 1835. An expenditure for his return was found in a government record dated March 21, 1839. It is not clear if James Trahern returned to Mississippi, but it is assumed he was sent home to the new Choctaw nation in present day Oklahoma.

In 1843, James N. Trahern married Sarah Hall, the half breed daughter of William Hall and his wife Susan Riddle. By 1849 James was a clerk in the Moshulatubbee district of the Choctaw Nation. He later became a judge for the same district, and is said to have occupied the post longer than any other judge. Though he was a judge, he was not a superior court judge for the Choctaw nation. From information I have run across, he was, along with his sons Lysander, "Don" and James D. "James Jr" members of the Choctaw congress at some point.

During the Civil War, late in 1860, Sarah Hall's brothers were killed in a slave uprising instigated by an overseer. Only one of her brother's survived the killing and avenged the murders with the help of a slave, the father of Squire Hall. It must be at this time that James and Sarah, along with the other members of the Hall family (except Sarah's Aunt, Margaret Hall Geary), sold the family land, which was located near or on the present Skullyville Cemetery, and their slaves to Walker Folsom. Though James is listed as a slave owner in 1860, he is not indicated as the owner of any freedman on the Choctaw rolls, nor are any of the Halls. Walker Folsom is though.

It is also during this time that the Choctaws had the Skullyville Convention. Tandy Walker was the second Governor of this time frame, and it is during his tenure that the Butterfield Stage route came into being. James N. Trahern was given the right to a stop along this route. This is probably because Sarah Hall, his wife, was a cousin of Tandy Walker. Trahern Station was located next to the Council house for the Mushulatubbee district. It is said, that across from the Council House if you looked out a window, you could see the grave of Mushulatubbee, who was Sarah Hall's great Uncle.

James and Sarah Hall had a large family. Their children were Louvina, Lysander, Robert, Catherine, James D., Joseph Hall and William Trahern. By 1885, William Trahern had either died or moved away, as no records have been found for him. James D. Trahern never married and assisted in raising his half sisters, the result of James N Trahern's second marriage to Virginia Parelli Clossen. These sisters were Docia and Minnie Trahern.

Sarah Hall Trahern died December 28, 1873 and James N. Trahern died March 29, 1883.

The Council House eventually became the home of an Ainsworth. Trahern Station burial ground was located next to the house. For years broken tombstones that had survived were piled up under trees in the area of this historical landmark, however, a cousin told me a few years back, the stones have been disposed of, and no markers survive to commemorate the family burials. Fortunately pictures of the graveyard were taken several years ago and can be accessed on the Leflore County genweb website.

I will list the descendants of James N. Trahern in the next blog.

These are pictures of James N. Trahern provided by descendants of Caty Trahern and of Docia Trahern.

The Trahern Chronicles- the non Mississippi Trahern's

I am going to cover the remaining Trahern's in this blog and then address the three brothers who move to Mississippi in other blogs. As mentioned previously, we only have information on John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Serena.

While I am not exactly sure which of John's descendants built the Trahern mansion of Tennessee, I do know that his descendants are the only Trahern's in Tennessee for that time frame.

More About Samuel Trahern:

Residence: 1850 in Southern District, Pittsylvania, Virginia; Age: 75 Sex: Male

Notes for Samuel Trahern:

Surety of marriages of Elizabeth and Serena. Census 1850 shows him living alone age 75, farmer. Also in census of Pittsylvania County in 1820. No entry for 1830 found thus far. (records destroyed for 1800 and 1810, is this the reason 1830 and 1840 missing as well?) In 1820 he has himself and two men in household... one 18-26, one 26-45 (most likely, is his brother William) 1840 Pittsylvannia county living alone Is this his son (no record of wife as of yet) or a nephew? Could this be Joel Trahern or Samuel C. Trahern that end up in Louisianna?
