Francis Varnod and enclosed by a letter dated 1-21-1725 to his Anglican employers in England.

Rev. Varnod was the Anglican minister/missionary in St. George Parish at that time. He made this census when he misunderstood directions just to count the inhabitants. Each head of household is followed by six numbers
and perhaps the letter D. The D was used for all dissenters, or individuals not attending the Anglican church. They were Quaker, Baptist, Congregationalist, or other. The first three numbers represent the white
(his word) people in the home by men, women, and children. The last three numbers are for slaves by men, women, and children. The last five heads of household in this list are titled Free Negros and Indians, and are called
free rather than white. Abbreviations were often used and I did not try to correct spelling.

  1. Hello Jennifer & thank you so much for sharing so much detailed information!-- I recently wrote you on Ancestry.com & thought I'd post this here too in case you visit here more often. My main Q is, have you considered/rejected/? the possibility that "John Cousins" in the Varnod census above is a forbear of Mary Cussins/Cousins Dyer (wife of Reuben Dyer of Tensaw)??

I believe this John Cossens aka "Cousins" (a Scottish indentured servant who arrived SC 1716) was in the very early SC Indian trade. By the Varnod 1725 census, he'd a wife (possibly #2) 2 kids & 1 enslaved. In 1735 records, there's a SC trader named George Cossens/Cousins (possibly John's son, or a Scots relation John'd brought over) among the Lower Creeks, & in 1760 there's a James Cossens among the Upper Creeks, as licensed trader to the Natchez village of "Nauchie"-- near Abihka & Talladega, where Joseph Stiggins later traded.

From the Spanish records, Mary Cussins/Cousins Dyer was born abt 1760, so she'd be abt 28 YO when Joseph Stiggins & Nancy Haw (a Natchez Indian) had George Stiggins in "Nauchies" in 1788.

Joseph Stiggins & Reuben Dyer seem to be linked prior to their move to the Tensaw area, & I know Reuben Dyer was in the Little Tallassee area in 1786 & carried a letter from Creek Chief/Gen'l Alexander McGillivray to the French. Also, in Deanna Slappey's published work, "Mary Cussins, Mother of Tensaw Settlement Survivors..." it's stated that Reuben Dyer's land near Augusta GA (that Reuben sold in 1791) was previously owned by a "William Cousins".

I've more info on "John Cossens" that I'll be happy to share if it's of interest to you Jennifer, & am hoping you'll tell me if you or Patti Hall have already considered and/or rejected the idea of James Cossens being Mary C's father??

Please read the Anct'y message from me OK Jennifer & & then I'd be very grateful for your opinions on this!
    thank you-- Ann

    1. sent you a few messages on ancestry. Patti mentioned the trader a long time ago. I haven't worked on anything Tensaw related in a few years now. Maybe it's time for another look
