This
varies greatly from most of the genealogy you will see regarding my
family. I have reasons for this.
1.
There is no Stephen Stapleton prior to 1800 that I have seen in
documentation. The Stephen Stapleton in the War of 1812 in South
Carolina is most likely the same Stephen who witnessed the deeds and
ran off from his family in 1821. There is a Solomon Stapleton in
Craven County, which includes the Cheraw District and he had land on
the Pee Dee River. Early records show Solomon as Staples, but given
that the DNA on one of Lodowick Stapleton's male DNA matches a Robert
Staples from England, I am not going to disregard this as a clue.
2.
Maurice/Morris Stapleton and William Stapleton are two different
people. The deeds seem to point clearly that Mary Townsend was
married to Maurice. However, assuming that because the 1816 deed is
signed by Lodowick and Job Stapleton means these are his sons is an
error. Job, the son of William is too young to witness a deed. If the
1880 census is correct, then Lodowick is barely old enough to
witness, but nephews do witness deeds also. Thus I have changed Mary
Townsend to the wife of Maurice and left no wife for William.
William's brother in law was Thomas Townsend, so if he signed a deed
as a witness that makes sense as well.
3.
Solomon Stapleton fits the age of the sons of Job Stapleton by the
census, so I have placed him there. I know that he could be a brother
to Maurice Stapleton as well.
4.
Maurice/Morris (born 1801) I have tentatively placed as a son of
Maurice Stapleton born 1770-1780. I did this because a Miss Mary E
(Louisa) Stapleton married John Evander Stapleton in 1848. John
Evander Stapleton is a son of Jobez Stapleton. So I know that he
didn't marry his niece, but likely his cousin's daughter.
5.
Catherine Stapleton's estate is administered by Elizabeth Singletary.
This tells me two things. First, that no male relative (son) was
available, as he would have been chosen before a daughter. Second,
that Elizabeth Singletary was widowed by 1834 (actually it appears
she was widowed before 1830). Thus, I know that Catherine Stapleton
is not the mother of Solomon and Morris, because they would have been
involved in the estate. I do not know, (but logically assume it could
be true based on the newspaper article), that Catherine Stapleton is
the "wife" abandoned by Stephen in 1821, so I don't have
her attached to a male. She could be the widow of someone else
(Stephen has 2 females over 21 in his household in 1820), or even a
sister who like Rhoda Townsend had an illegitimate child.
6.
Because Barbara Stapleton is listed in 1800 as over 45, I have
tentatively included her as a mother. Elizabeth Stapleton in 1813 is
most likely the widow of a Stapleton who we have no name for.
7.
I did not include Nancy Ann Stapleton that Lisa Franklin is
researching, because I do not know that information and did not find
a marriage record. I do know that all of the families seem to have
females old enough, however, we can rule out William because of the
1832 lawsuit.
8.
The 1832 lawsuit, posted weekly April 1832 through September 1832 in
the Florida Advocate (available online) can be found at the Florida
Archives, Supreme Court Records of Jefferson County. I haven't
attempted to obtain a copy yet. It lists the children of William
Stapleton deceased as Lodowick, Diadema Pyburn (Jacob),
William, Amelia Shannon (John M), Job, Seaborn, Zeno Zenathan and
Lorenzo minor vs John Stapleton, Lovitt M James, J Harrison and H
Lanthrop.

Hello
ReplyDeleteI am interested in this family. I have a copy of the lawsuit from the superior court of Jackson County Florida regarding this family. I am descended from Nancy Ann Stapleton Franklin born 1809 in South Carolina. I have information to share with you. My research partner Lisa Franklin and I have been researching this family for many years. I am curious if you are a family dna match. My email is belindaj@sbcglobal.net
Sorry for the delay. Not only do we have a dna match but we have a paper trail, Diadema Pyburn is listed in the court documents.
Deletemy family has acopy of the Seven Townsend Brothers of Texas have you looked at it? The Stapletons are in it also.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the delay. No never have seen it
